There are other ways to build equity. One could even buy BlackRock stock which pays a dividend. If more shares are added to over time that dividend will increasingly offset the rent one pays to that same or a similar corporation. There is a similar concept using life insurance to create one's own pool of capital or bank, instead of using commercial banks for loans.
Yes, the system is biased towards the haves, but at least for now, one can take steps away from serfdom if they are intent on doing so.
